September 29 (Renewables Now) – The clean ammonia business of Norwegian crop nutrition company Yara International ASA will join a pilot project in Rogaland involving the first in-field test of a 1-MW PEM electrolyser engineered and designed by Hystar AS.
The project will take place at Gassco’s Karsto gas processing plant where the containerised electrolyser will be commissioned in the second half of 2023. The device will be run for a total of 10,000 hours and the performance data it provides will be used to verify long-term commercial operation.
“We look forward to collaborating with Hystar and studying the results of the 1 MW pilot electrolyser project. The knowledge we gain from the HyPilot project will give valuable input to our work in developing green ammonia for fertiliser, deep-sea shipping, and power production,” commented Lise Winther, SVP Upstream Projects & Technologies at Yara Clean Ammonia.
Another partner in this project is Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR). The energy major and offshore wind developer “will demonstrate dynamic hydrogen production tailored to suit the variable output typically found in wind applications.”
Hystar, a spin-off of European independent research organisation SINTEF, said that over the coming months it will fabricate a complete PEM electrolyser capable of producing up to 500 kg of green hydrogen per day.
The company claims that the membrane it uses in its patented design is significantly thinner than those in conventional PEM electrolysers, which provides for better efficiency. It believes it will be able to reach onsite gigawatt-scale production by 2025.
