April 25 (Renewables Now) – Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) on Monday unveiled its first Taiwan-made offshore wind turbine blade, manufactured as part of the company’s efforts to establish a local supply chain to serve projects in Taiwanese waters.
The new blade will attached to Vestas’ V174-9.5MW turbines, which will be used in the assembly of the 589-MW Changfang and Xidao offshore wind farm off the coast of Taiwan.
Taiwanese company Tien Li Offshore Wind Technology Co Ltd made the 35-tonne and 85-metre long blade at its factory in Taichung, which it built after striking a supply contract with the Danish turbine maker.
“The completion overcame many challenges, such as lack of raw materials for factory construction, the COVID impact and boundary restrictions that limit sending our engineers and also the supporting resources came in, especially at the technical transferring process. Even though, we held the strong belief and commitment to solve all the problems and made the first Taiwan blade happened,” said KD WU, Chairman of Tien Li.
Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), which developed the Changfang and Xidao project, will install the blade in 2022, Vestas said.
