The US Department of Energy (DoE) has selected a number of solar companies and nonprofits to receive up to USD 440 million (EUR 411m) to install rooftop solar and battery storage systems for vulnerable households in Puerto Rico.
The funding represents the first tranche of the USD-1-billion Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund and is expected to provide solar and storage systems to 30,000-40,000 single-family households.
Three solar companies with an existing workforce in Puerto Rico — Generac Power Systems Inc, Sunnova Energy Corp and Sunrun Inc — will start award negotiations for a total of USD 400 million. Five nonprofits and cooperatives will also enter award negotiations and may receive a total of USD 40 million.
“With this announcement, we take a critical step forward in our efforts to ensure that all Puerto Rico residents have reliable electricity, especially the most vulnerable families and communities for whom a lack of power can be life or death,” US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday.
The funding opportunity was announced in July.
