August 26 (Renewables Now) – Research projects into clean energy technologies and low-carbon manufacturing led by universities and national laboratories across the US are getting USD 540 million (EUR 540m) of awards from the US Department of Energy (DoE).
The funding, announced on Thursday, includes more than USD 400 million for creating and continuing 43 Energy Frontier Research Centres, where multi-disciplinary scientific teams aim to solve challenges faced by progressing energy technologies. The projects are led by 28 universities and nine national laboratories, with their scopes ranging from energy storage to quantum information science.
A further 53 projects, led by researchers at 33 universities and 11 national laboratories, will get USD 140 million under the Chemical and Materials Sciences to Advance Clean Energy Technologies and Low-Carbon Manufacturing funding opportunity.
“The research projects announced today will strengthen the scientific foundations needed for the United States to maintain world leadership in clean energy innovation, from renewable power to carbon management,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm.
