June 29 (Renewables Now) – Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines on Tuesday kicked off a green hydrogen project that represents the North African country’s first commitment to the production of clean hydrogen.
The “Green hydrogen for sustainable growth and a low-carbon economy in Tunisia” project, also known as H2Vert.TUN, is aimed at creating a framework for developing a value chain based on renewable energy for the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives in the country, local media reported on Tuesday.
The initiative is supported by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is implemented by Germany-based company GIZ.
In the medium-term, green hydrogen in Tunisia could be used for the decarbonisation of the fertiliser industry where locally produced green ammonia could replace imported ammonia produced with fossil fuels.
Earlier this month, Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines Neila Gonji reaffirmed the country’s commitment to green energy by saying: “Tunisia is determined to develop the renewable energy sector despite the delay it has experienced.”
The statement was made at the inauguration of the first floating photovoltaic (PV) park in the Middle East and North Africa which went online in Tunisia last weekend.
