Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp (Toshiba ESS) and Next Kraftwerke Toshiba Corp (TNK) have completed a demonstration project that improved the accuracy of renewable energy power generation forecasts and reduced imbalances through the use of storage batteries.

The trial involved 200 energy resources, including solar power, wind power and storage batteries, and used REBSet, a renewable energy balancing system developed by Next Kraftwerke and Toshiba ESS.

Toshiba ESS said recently that the use of cloud-controlled storage batteries achieved an average of about 70% reduction in renewable generation imbalances.

The team also improved the accuracy of solar and wind power forecasts by developing new forecasting methods, increasing the frequency forecasts and making forecasts at times closer to actual power generation.

The work further included assessing the profitability of renewable energy aggregators. It showed that income can be increased by creating a charge/discharge plan for storage batteries based on generation forecasts and day-ahead market prices forecasts.

The project was supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and was conducted by a consortium of 14 renewable energy aggregators, including Toshiba ESS, and nine partner companies.
