Scottish planners have accepted for determination SSE Renewables’ proposal for the onshore elements of the up-to-4.1-GW Berwick Bank Wind Farm in Scottish waters, the unit of SSE Plc (LON:SSE) said on Friday.
The proposal for the onshore elements is being considered by East Lothian Council, with a final decision expected to be issued this year. The consent process is run along with the offshore permit procedure by the Scottish government that was initiated in December last year.
Berwick Bank is planned to be installed roughly 38 kilometers (23.6 miles) off the East Lothian coast, in the outer Firth of Forth. Set to become the largest offshore wind park in British waters, the complex is planned to generate first power in 2027. Full operations will be targeted by 2030.
Initially, the huge project consisted of two separate proposals – Berwick Bank and Marr Bank. The two were combined in the initial rounds of consultation and named collectively Berwick Bank Wind Farm.
Once completed, the offshore wind complex will generate enough electricity to supply power to over five million homes.
