SSE Renewables, part of UK utility SSE Plc (LON:SSE), on Tuesday started a public consultation on a potential fourth phase of Dogger Bank Wind Farm, called Dogger Bank D.

Being delivered in three phases, the 3.6-GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm is set to become the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

SSE Renewables said that subject to further technical studies, Dogger Bank D could be able to generate up to around 2 GW. It would be located around 210 km (130 miles) off the northeast coast of England.

SSE Renewables also said that “[t]he project team is working closely with The Crown Estate to agree the progression of Dogger Bank D.”

Dogger Bank D is being developed by a 50/50 joint venture between SSE Renewables and Norway’s Equinor (OSE:EQNR).The companies announced in February they are exploring options for a Dogger Bank fourth phase that could add 1.32 GW in fixed-bottom capacity.

The consultation will run till November 7 and a second consultation round is planned for the summer of 2024. The feedback will support project development ahead of a potential application for a development consent order.

The developers are looking at different options for the project that involve supplying electricity via a link to the UK grid or to a wider network to Europe and producing hydrogen in a new large-scale onshore facility.
