Renewable energy developer Squadron Energy, backed by Australian iron ore billionaire Andrew Forrest, has officially opened a 224-MW wind farm in New South Wales, it announced on Friday.
The Bango Wind Farm, touted as one of the largest ones in New South Wales, is located in the state’s Southern Tablelands region, and is expected to generate 748,000 MWh of electricity annually. A portion of its output is contracted by Aussie retailer Woolworths Group (ASX:WOW), which in 2021 committed to buying 195,000 MWh per year under a 10-year power purchase agreement.
Among the other power off-takers are retailer Snowy Hydro Ltd and road operator Transurban.
Sited 30km north of Yass, Ngunnawal Country, the wind farm is equipped with 43 units of General Electric’s 5.3 MW turbines. Its annual power generation is estimated to be equal to the consumption of 144,000 homes.
Squadron Energy is controlled by Andrew Forrest’s privately-owned firm Tattarang. At end-2022, it acquired domestic platform CWP Renewables in a move that allowed it to expand its renewable energy fleet to 2.4 GW and grow its Australian development pipeline to 20 GW.
