Nashville-based renewable energy company Silicon Ranch has completed a 20-MW AC solar farm coupled with an 80-MWh battery energy storage system in southeastern Arizona.
The company has held a ribbon-cutting event to mark completion of the McNeal solar and battery storage project together with distribution cooperative Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC).
Silicon Ranch developed and funded the project, investing over USD 70 million (EUR 66.5m) in the facility. It will also be its long-term owner and operator. The initiative involves a new substation, which replaces an existing facility serving SSVEC members in the area and encompasses the interconnection infrastructure for the solar-plus-storage project.
SSVEC chief executive Jason Bowling said the project “allows SSVEC to increase the amount of affordable, renewable energy for our members, while supporting system reliability and promoting energy independence.” Over the past several years, SSVEC has transitioned most of its energy purchases from coal to natural gas, hydropower and solar power.
