Steel and mining major ArcelorMittal SA (AMS:MT) has ordered Siemens Gamesa turbines for a 166-MW wind farm it will install as part of a 975-MW round-the-clock renewable energy complex in India.

The contract was placed by ArcelorMittal’s Indian subsidiary and will see the wind turbine manufacturer deliver 46 units of its SG 3.6-145 machines. The hardware will power a wind farm in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Siemens Gamesa said on Wednesday.

The future output of the Kurnool wind farm will be used to supply ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat. The plant will form part of a huge complex of solar and wind farms in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh, which the steel and mining giant will build to lower the carbon footprint of its operations.

Siemens Gamesa will make the turbines locally and start deliveries in the second quarter of 2023.

The 989-MW complex is a project of AM Green Energy Private Limited (AMGEPL), a local joint venture of ArcelorMittal and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Ltd (AM/NS India). The capacity will be installed by Hyderabad-based Greenko Group and is due to be commissioned in mid-2024.
