UK engine maker Rolls-Royce Holdings (LON:RR) has successfully tested a gas type of engine with hydrogen in a step towards a market introduction of hydrogen solutions.

The company said on Monday it has completed tests of a 12-cylinder gas variant of the mtu Series 4000 L64 engine operating on 100% hydrogen fuel.

“This engine will serve the market demand for hydrogen solutions in the energy transition and will be available to our customers as a reliable and clean power source for gensets and combined heat and power plants,” said Tobias Ostermaier of Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems business unit.

According to the company, the tests showed good results in terms of efficiency, power, emissions and combustion. Because of hydrogen’s different combustion properties, some engine components such as fuel injection, turbocharging, piston design and control, were modified in the test engine, it explained.

Rolls-Royce plans to provide a conversion solution for gas engines already in use.

The mtu engines powered by 100% hydrogen will be first installed at a new container terminal in the German inland port of Duisburg in 2024. The port will deploy two combined heat and power plants with mtu Series 4000 hydrogen engines with a combined installed capacity of 2 MW and three mtu fuel cell systems totalling 1.5 MW.
