Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) has secured a EUR-630-million (USD 674m) contract by Italian transmission grid operator Terna SpA for the Adriatic Link project, a 1-GW submarine connection between the Abruzzo and Marche regions.
Terna plans to invest a total of EUR 1.3 billion in the project that will enhance the exchange of energy between the central-southern and central-northern areas of Italy.
Prysmian has been tasked with supplying and laying the power cables for the link, which is 250 kilometres (155 miles) long, including 210 km under the sea.
“The Adriatic Link holds strategic importance for the integration of renewable sources, thus contributing to the decarbonisation of the Italian energy system. The undersea connection also allows for the creation of a highly sustainable electrical infrastructure with minimal impact on the environment,” said Terna’s international development director Giacomo Donnini. The Adriatic Link will play a key role in the development and transfer of wind and solar energy in southern Italy to the energy-intensive centres in the North.
Prysmian expects to complete the cables laying operations in the first half of 2028.
