Transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT on Friday said it has selected cable makers NKT A/S (CPH:NKT) and Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) to install the cable systems for five 2-GW grid connections in the Dutch North Sea.

The contracts cover design, engineering, production, delivery, project management, offshore-, nearshore- and inshore installation of the world’s first 525 kV XLPE HVDC offshore cable systems. The projects are expected to be completed between 2028 and 2030.

Danish manufacturer NKT said its order is worth about EUR 2 billion (USD 2.1bn). It will be responsible for the cables for the IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma and Nederwiek 2 connections that will come ashore at Maasvlakte, Port of Rotterdam.

Italy’s Prysmian said its contract is worth about EUR 1.8 billion. It will be in charge of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 links landing onshore at Sloegebied, Zeeland.

The companies are expected to start activities on the projects this year, with onshore cable laying work to begin in 2025 and offshore cable laying to commence in 2026.

The 2-GW links are TenneT’s new standardised platform aimed at increasing the speed and efficiency of the energy transition.

“Recent geopolitical developments have again underlined the need to invest in electricity transmission, to ensure energy security by accelerating the energy transition,” commented TenneT chief operating officer Tim Meyerjuergens.

At the North Sea Energy Summit in May 2022, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium committed to at least 65 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. Of this, TenneT will account for 20 GW each in the German and Dutch North Sea.
