Nhoa Energy, a unit of Nhoa SA (EPA:NHOA), formerly Engie EPS, has been awarded a turnkey project for a 39-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to be installed at an existing combined cycle gas plant in central Italy.

The project was selected by Italian grid operator Terna SpA (BIT:TRN) in the 2024 Capacity Market auction, the energy storage and e-mobility firm said in a press release today.

Construction works on the energy storage site are scheduled to start by the end of the year. The battery is expected to enter commercial operation by December 2024.

The new award follows the delivery of 70 MW of BESS under a previous Fast Reserve Units (FRUs) tender held by Terna and, according to Nhoa Energy, paves the way for more deployments through future auctions in the country.

As part of the Fit-for-55 EU framework, Italy aims to have 71 GWh of new grid-scale battery storage by 2030.
