China’s Mingyang Smart Energy Group Ltd (SHA:601615) on Wednesday announced a deal to supply offshore wind turbines for an 80-MW offshore wind project in South Korean waters.

The turbine manufacturer has been contracted by South Korea-based Woori Technology and concerns the latter’s Aphae project. According to the statement, the award will facilitate Mingyang’s entry into South Korea and make it the first Chinese turbine maker setting foot in this market.

The Aphae wind park will be installed in the Jeollanam-do province of the Asian country, off its southwestern coast. It will be equipped with 13 turbine generators of 6.5 MW each, which the manufacturer says are the best option for low wind speed conditions with typhoons.

The hardware will be made at a local factory in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, with the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the project slated to begin early in 2024.

Aphae is the first privately-led South Korean offshore wind farm of over 50 MW in size, Mingyang noted.
