November 29 (Renewables Now) – Global renewables developer Mainstream Renewable Power and offshore wind developer Maple Power have teamed up to launch a joint bid in the upcoming floating wind leasing tender in the Celtic Sea, they said on Tuesday.

The tender is due to commence next year and is expected to deliver 4 GW of floating wind farms by 2035. In October, the British Crown Estate, the seabed landlord, replaced the previously-published “areas of search” with five smaller areas, which are to be further refined in the coming months.

Maple Power and Mainstream intend to combine their experience in developing floating offshore wind projects on a commercial scale. Toronto, Canada-based Maple Power has co-developed offshore wind schemes in Europe with a combined capacity of over 2 GW, while Mainstream has developed some of the UK’s largest offshore wind projects, such as Hornsea One and Two, and is now involved in gigawatt-scale floating wind schemes in South Korea and Scotland.

“I believe Mainstream and Maple Power bring together highly complementary capabilities and experience which will support us well in our aim to bid on and develop floating offshore wind in the region,” said Tove Roskaft, head of Offshore Wind at Mainstream.

The Celtic Sea area, the waters around the South Wales coast and the Southwest peninsula, cover a total area of 300,000 square kilometres.
