December 15 (Renewables Now) – Japanese heavy-industry manufacturer IHI Corp (TYO:7013) will study tapping Malaysia’s solar resources to produce green ammonia in partnership with Gentari, the clean energy platform of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas.
IHI said today it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gentari’s subsidiary Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd. Under it, the parties will explore a business model for solar power generation and green ammonia production in Johor, Malaysia. The green ammonia will be used for power generation and marine fuel supply in the local market and for exports to the Japanese and Asian markets.
The partners plan to complete the feasibility studies by the beginning of 2023 and to have a commercial ammonia production plant in operation in 2026.
Gentari was launched in the summer with the ambition to reach 30 GW-40 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade. It has just been announced that the platform has agreed to acquire a stake in Northland Power Inc’s Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan.
