Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) expects that it will be able to finalise the 496-MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind project in French waters by the end of 2023 as scheduled, the group said on Friday.
The installation of the EUR-2.4-billion (USD 2.59bn) wind farm will wrap up on time, despite construction starting in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, Iberdrola stated.
Not long after the launch, the project faced an offshore protest when a group of French fishermen stormed the area with boats and fired distress rockets, creating a temporary disruption.
So far, 35 of the wind farm’s 62 turbines and 51 of the 62 jackets have been installed at the Saint-Brieuc site off the coast of Brittany, the company said in Friday’s update. On July 5 this year, the first turbines started feeding electricity into the grid.
Once fully up and running, the Saint-Brieuc wind farm will be capable of generating around 1,820 GWh of electricity per year, producing enough to power a city almost as large as Marseille, Iberdrola added.
