Holcim US, part of Swiss building materials group Holcim AG (SWX:HOLN) on Thursday announced plans for a 25-MW solar project at its cement plant in Alpena, Michigan.
The solar array will contribute to Holcim’s aim to power all of its US operations with renewable energy by 2030. Combined with existing renewable energy initiatives, the solar project will allow the plant to meet 75% of its electricity needs with self-generated green energy.
The project will see the installation of fixed-tilt bifacial solar panels on 100 acres (40 ha) of Holcim’s Alpena property. It will be implemented by NorthStar Clean Energy. Holcim will get about 35,000 MWh of power a year under a solar equipment service contract for at least 20 years. Construction will start in 2023, with the facility expected to go live in December 2024.
