Google LLC has entered into wind power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Dutch utility Eneco and Belgian green power producer Luminous in pursuit of its goal to offer its services with carbon-free energy by 2030.
In Belgium, Google will procure power from four wind farms totalling 23.8 MW that were recently switched on by Luminous, the latter said on Thursday. The contract covers the deliveries of more than 550 GWh of electricity for 12 years, starting from 2024 at the latest. The supply of Guarantees of Origin is included, as well.
Luminus estimates that the PPA will help Google lower its carbon footprint by more than 6,700 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. The Belgian company co-owns three of the contracted assets together with partners, it noted.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Eneco will supply Google with around 0.5 TWh of electricity annually from roughly 153 MW of wind turbine capacity. The 10-year PPA is tied to the 382.7-MW Fryslan nearshore wind park in the Frisian part of the Ijsselmeer Lake and the 80-MW Kroningswind wind farm in South Holland province. Both plants are in operation and Eneco is the power off-taker for each of them.
Google will get 288 GWh of electricity annually from the Fryslan complex, coming from 73.5 MW of its capacity. The supplies from Kroningswind will be sourced from 79.8 MW of capacity, resulting in 227 GWh per year.
Thanks to the PPA, about 80% of the power used at Google’s Eemshaven data centre will be sustainable in 2024.
