June 15 (Renewables Now) – Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) has teamed up with renewable energy developer Bluestone Energy to jointly deploy up to 2 GW of battery energy storage projects across the UK.
The two companies have sealed a joint development agreement and already have 970 MW of projects in early-stage development, with grid-connection offers in place. GIG announced the arrangement on Tuesday, saying that the partnership’s initial pipeline continues to “grow steadily.”
GIG will provide technology know-how from its experience in the battery storage field, where it already has several projects and is partnering with France’s Engie and Fluence, the energy storage joint venture of US-based AES Corp and Germany’s Siemens AG. Bluestone, meanwhile, will contribute with its record in the development of utility-scale wind, solar and battery storage projects.
The collaboration aims to facilitate the further integration of renewable energy capacity by providing flexibility and stability to the UK power grid, thus supporting the country’s 2050 net-zero goal.
“GIG’s partnership with Bluestone Energy is an exciting step for us in the market, and we look forward to generating even more opportunities to accelerate the deployment of this critical technology,” said Greg Callman, global head of GIG Energy Technology.
