May 2 (Renewables Now) – Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Firstgas Group of New Zealand will partner to explore producing and distributing green hydrogen in New Zealand under a non-binding memorandum of understanding, unveiled on Monday.
Firstgas’ gas network in the North Island, which is the largest in New Zealand, serves more than 300,000 homes and businesses. In March last year, it announced plans to move to hydrogen blending from 2030 and to a 100% hydrogen grid by 2050.
The green energy business of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) and Firstgas will conduct feasibility studies into opportunities to develop projects, including assessing the use of existing energy assets.
“Partnering with companies like Firstgas enables us to combine FFI’s global experience and expertise in green hydrogen, with strong local knowledge and existing infrastructure,” noted FFI director of Australia East and New Zealand Felicity Underhill.
