Enel Grids, the electricity distribution business of Italian utility group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL), connected almost 5.6 GW of distributed renewable energy capacity to its distribution grids in 2022.

The business said on Thursday this is a record high number, corresponding to about 411,000 producers and prosumers, and takes its total grid-connected small and medium-scale renewable capacity globally to 65.7 GW.

Of the new capacity last year, 2.4 GW was connected in Italy. Solar installations accounted for most of this. Enel Grids also connected 2.2 GW of capacity in Spain. The remaining capacity was mainly added in Brazil, where 800 MW was connected to the grids.

The company said the record numbers are underpinned by ever-increasing hosting capacity and high level of digitalisation of its distribution grids.

“Power grids are key in the current energy scenario, marked by the growing and ever more decentralised renewable generation and the increasingly active role of customers […],” commented Enel Grids head Antonio Cammisecra.

“We are expecting even greater volumes for 2023 and beyond, as shown by the consistent growth of requests in the first weeks of the year,” added Cammisecra.
