October 26 (Renewables Now) – The renewables subsidiary of Italian utility Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) has commenced construction work on a 399-MW expansion of the 1-GW Lagoa dos Ventos wind complex in Brazil.

Enel Green Power said on Tuesday that some BRL 2.5 billion (USD 471.7m/EUR 478.4m) will be invested in the Lagoa dos Ventos V project which is being carried out in the municipality of Dom Inocencio, in the northeast state of Piaui.

Lagoa dos Ventos V will feature 70 wind turbines capable of generating around 1,670 GW per year. This is the second expansion of the wind complex, the renewables company pointed out in the press release.

The first expansion was launched in 2020 and is currently partially operational with full commissioning set to take place by the end of the year.

Lagoa dos Ventos is already South America’s largest wind park in operation and once fully up and running, it will reach 1.5 GW of installed capacity and generate more than 6.7 TWh per year.

At present, Enel Group has more than 4.9 GW of renewable capacity in Brazil, of which over 2.4 GW are wind, about 1.2 GW are solar and around 1.3 GW are hydro.
