November 25 (Renewables Now) – Renewable power company Enel Green Power Chile SA has commenced the construction works on a 105.6-MW wind project, which also includes a 34.3-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in southern Chile.
The renewable energy unit of Italian energy major Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said on Thursday the La Cabana wind farm will require an investment of around USD 190 million (EUR 182.5m).
Located in Angol municipality, Araucania region, La Cabana will feature a total of 22 wind turbines, each with an individual capacity of 4.8 MW. Enel Green Power estimates some 450 people will be employed during peak construction.
“Through the development of La Cabana, we are also continuing our strategy of hybridization of non-conventional renewable generation plants. This wind project is Enel Chile’s first using storage batteries, through which we will have greater flexibility in managing the plant,” said Enel Chile’s chief executive, Fabrizio Barderi.
Currently, Enel Chile’s renewable portfolio consists of over 1.5 GW of solar, 642 MW of wind, around 3.5 GW of hydro and 69 MW of geothermal power.
