EDF Renewables is planning to develop, build and operate an offshore wind power complex, off the coast of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Norte state, with an estimated capacity of up to 2 GW.
The announcement was made by the state government during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the renewables arm of French electric utility group EDF SA (EPA:EDF) and local firm International Energias Renovaveis (IER).
EDF expects to commence power generation at the offshore wind complex in 2030. The complex has been under development in cooperation with IER since 2020.
According to Andre Salgado, CEO of EDF Renewables do Brasil, the company is expanding and diversifying its portfolio in Latin America, and the project in Rio Grande do Norte is an important step in this direction.
At present, the renewables company has four onshore wind complexes with a total of more than 1.4 GW in Brazil’s northeast region, the executive noted.
