Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS) said today it has started operations of the 250-MW Pisgah Ridge project in Texas, its largest solar power plant.

Located in Navarro County, the solar park will sell most of its output to three companies under 15-year virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs).

Charles River Laboratories International Inc has contracted a 102-MW portion of the project, which will cover its entire North American electric power load. Midwest retailer Meijer has agreed to offtake another 83 MW. There is also a third VPPA agreement with an unnamed buyer. The three contracts account for over 90% of the plant’s output.

DESS, a non-regulated commercial brand of Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK), started building the project in 2021. Moss was in charge of the engineering and construction work. DESS will own and operate the array. The company currently operates almost 1,500 MW of wind, 750 MW of solar and a 36-MW battery storage facility in Texas.
