October 13 (Renewables Now) – US power technology company Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) is getting ready to start construction work on a 1-GW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser production facility in Spain’s central region of Castile-La Mancha.
The company said in a statement today it expects this to happen soon. It announced the selection of Guadalajara as the location for the factory last year and earlier in 2022 bought more than 530,000 sq ft (50,000 sq m) of land for the project in the province’s industrial area.
At first, the 200,000-sq-ft facility will be able to manufacture 500 MW of electrolysers annually and will have the option to more than double its capacity. It will enable system assembly and testing activities.
Construction is seen to be finalised at the end of next year.
“With the support of the Spanish government and European Union, Spain’s hydrogen market has great potential. This facility will poise Cummins to help European customers transition their energy supply and meet ambitious sustainability goals. This plant is also another step toward achieving Cummins’ own carbon neutrality targets,” commented Amy Davis, Vice President and President of New Power at Cummins.
Meanwhile, Cummins is expanding its existing PEM electrolyser manufacturing plant in Oevel, Belgium, to 1 GW.
Earlier this week, the company also said it will set up its first US electrolyser factory in Fridley, Minnesota, with an initial capacity of 500 MW a year and the potential for a scale-up to 1 GW.
