May 25 (Renewables Now) – Austrian wind energy companies Windkraft Simonsfeld AG and WEB Windenergie AG have broken the ground on the installation of a total of six turbines to expand the capacity of an existing wind park in Lower Austria by a total of 33.9 MW.
Windkraft Simonsfeld will build three Nordex N 163 machines each with a capacity of 5.7 MW in the municipality of Duernkrut, Lower Austria. The turbines are expected to produce 45.5 million kWh which is enough to supply 11,400 households. As soon as the power grid is expanded, an additional 4 million kWh will be fed into the grid to supply a further 1,000 households, said Windkraft Simonsfeld’s executive Markus Winter.
WEB Windenergie AG will put three new wind turbines in the municipalities of Duernkrut and Velm-Goetzendorf into operation by the second quarter of 2023. Two Vestas V162 turbines with a total output of 11.2 MW will be installed in Duernkrut and will produce green electricity for 20,000 people. A 5.6-MW Vestas V150 machine will be set up in Goetzendorf to supply power for OMV AG (VIE:OMV). The oil and gas group will use the electricity to produce green hydrogen.
The foundations will be built in the autumn and the six turbines will be installed next spring with commissioning scheduled to start in the middle of 2023.
This is the third expansion phase of the wind park. Each of the two companies already operates nine wind turbines in the two municipalities in Lower Austria. The first machines were set up ten years ago.
