May 31 (Renewables Now) – Mexican construction materials maker Cemex SAB de CV (BMV:CEMEXCPO) has inaugurated an alternative fuel plant at its Rugby cement production facility in the UK that uses household residual and commercial waste.
The company said in a statement that the investment in this project aims to eliminate fossil fuel usage at the Rugby cement plant and enable it to run on 100% alternative fuels. Rugby is the first company-owned plant to achieve this milestone, it added.
“With the completion of this considerable development, we have set new records in alternative fuel substitution, the highest of any of our plants and eventually expect to phase out completely the usage of fossil fuels at the plant,” commented Sergio Menendez, president of Cemex Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia.
The new facility produces Climafuel, a waste-derived fuel that looks like shredded paper and consists of paper, cardboard, wood, carpet, textiles and plastics. With the new plant, Cemex expects to process in Europe the equivalent annual residues of a city the size of Madrid or Berlin.
The company noted that it is on track to achieve a 40% emissions reduction in its European operations this year, whilst pursuing its 2030 target of a 55% reduction in Europe.
