September 23 (Renewables Now) – Canada’s Ballard Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:BLDP) has secured an order to supply Siemens Mobility GmbH with fuel cell modules for seven hydrogen passenger trains for the Berlin and Brandenburg region.
The contract is for 14 fuel cell modules of 200 kW each, the delivery of which is to begin in 2023. The fleet of Mireo Plus H passenger trains that will use the modules is planned to enter service in late 2024.
“Our first order for a fleet of hydrogen-powered trains will enable emission-free rail transport on non-electrified routes in Germany,” said Jochen Steinbauer, Siemens Mobility’s Platform Director H2 Technologies.
Siemens Mobility has also signed a letter of intent with Ballard for the delivery of 200 more fuel cell modules with a total capacity of 40 MW over the next six years. This includes a firm commitment for 100 modules.
“Our fuel cell technology is an ideal solution to support the heavy payload, long range and rapid refueling requirements of Siemen Mobility’s passenger train fleet. We look forward to our continued collaboration and are excited for the opportunity to support the Berlin and Brandenburg region’s first hydrogen powered rail network,” said Ballard CCO David Mucciacciaro.
