The final of 103 Vestas V117 4.3MW turbines has been installed at SSE Renewables’ 443-MW Viking wind farm in Shetland, the unit of UK energy company SSE PLC (LON:SSE) said on Friday.

The milestone comes a little more than three years after the project’s groundbreaking. Turbine installation started in February 2023 and was completed ahead of schedule as it was due to be finished in the autumn.

The remote island wind project will be completed in 2024 following commissioning works. Once up and running, the wind farm is expected to produce up to 1.8 TWh of electricity a year, equivalent to powering nearly half a million British households, which will make it the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, the company says.

In 2022, SSE Renewables secured a contract for difference (CfD) for half of the capacity of the Viking wind project.
