August 31 (Renewables Now) – US industrial gases supplier Air Products (NYSE:APD) and Associated British Ports (ABP) on Tuesday said they are teaming up on plans to deliver the UK’s first large-scale green hydrogen production facility.
It would be located at the Port of Immingham on the Humber estuary and would import green ammonia that would be used to produce green hydrogen for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as transport and industry. The green ammonia would be imported from production sites operated by Air Products and its partners globally.
The UK aims to have 10 GW of low-carbon hydrogen in production or construction by 2030, but currently there is no significant capacity in the country, the companies noted.
ABP will invest in new infrastructure with a new jetty to handle the green ammonia and potentially other cargoes such as the import of liquified carbon dioxide (CO2) from carbon capture and storage projects for sequestration in the North Sea.
The initiative adds to Air Products’ plan to develop a blue hydrogen facility in Immingham.
“We are forging sustainable hydrogen supply chains with our partners and using our hydrogen knowledge and expertise to accelerate the energy transition,” Air Products’ president, Europe and Africa, Ivo Bols said, adding that the company was in positive talks with government representatives about its plans to invest in UK green hydrogen. “To enable our investment decision, we are seeking some policy assurances that a viable market will exist for our product,” Bols added.
