AGL Energy Ltd (ASX:AGL) is expected to commission a 250 MW/250 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Australia’s Torrens Island in a few weeks, having received approval for performance standards by market regulator AEMO.
Following the green light from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), electricity transmission company ElectraNet has executed the transmission connection agreement for the project, it said earlier this week. According to it, the battery will be fully energised in the next few weeks.
The one-hour Torrens Island BESS is being installed in the Adelaide metropolitan area, using technology by Finnish group Wartsila Corp. It was designed to improve energy security and the reliability of the grid and to support the greater deployment of renewable energy capacity amid plans to transform a local gas-fired station into a low-carbon industrial energy hub.
The Torrens Island battery would be the first of an 850-MW bundle of projects that AGL plans to roll out by the end of fiscal 2024. The utility previously said it could expand the system to up to four hours, or 1,000 MWh.
