The city of San Antonio in Texas will pour USD 30.8 million (EUR 28.9m) to install photovoltaic (PV) panels across city-owned sites under what it says is the largest on-site municipal solar programme.
The initiative was given the green light by the San Antonio City Council on Thursday. It will be implemented under a partnership with San Antonio-based installer Big Sun Solar, which will take care of the installation and long-term maintenance of the PV arrays.
Specifically, the project calls for 42 city-owned facilities to be equipped with solar systems. More than half of the proposed sites will have PV panels mounted on rooftop areas and parking lots to create canopies, while some solar shades are planned for parks and community centres.
Installation works are slated to begin next spring and should be completed in the autumn of 2026.
Currently, 10 city buildings in San Antonio are equipped with solar panels. The City Council expects some USD 1.8 million of savings per year will be achieved thanks to the new project.
San Antonio intends to pay for the effort with USD 18.3 million of taxable bonds, a USD-2.5 million loan and some USD 10 million in tax credits. The city’s goal is to achieve net zero municipal operations by 2040.
