TEH2, the hydrogen subsidiary of Total Eren, and Finnish company Aliceco Energy have teamed up to develop what they said today will be one of Europe’s largest electrofuels projects in Kokkola, Finland.

The Vanadis Fuels Project, located in Kokkola Industrial Park, will produce low-carbon e-fuels for industrial sectors and the shipping industry. It will generate e-methanol by producing green hydrogen via electrolysis and capturing biogenic carbon dioxide from biomass.

Aliceco will focus on local development in Kokkola, while Total Eren, which is partly owned by TotalEnergies, will contribute its experience in the development, financing, construction and operation of solar, wind and hydrogen projects. The companies look to partner with local energy supplier Kokkolan Energia, Kokkola Industrial Park and the Port of Kokkola. They target reaching e-methanol production capacity of up to 400,000 tonnes per year, with first production expected in 2029.

The Vanadis Fuels Project will involve the first commercial-scale use of Aliceco Energy’s Oxygen-combustion solution. The technology concentrates and captures the biogenic CO2 flue gas from Kokkola Energia’s biomass boilers without using chemical substances on a large scale like conventional technologies, the partners explained.
