French industrial gases company Air Liquide (EPA:AI) will purchase 200 MW of renewable energy in China under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with subsidiaries of China Three Gorges.

The contract with the China Three Gorges Renewables and China Three Gorges Corporation Jiangsu Branch, is the first long-term PPA for renewable electricity sealed by Air Liquide in China, following PPAs in the US, Europe and South Africa, as well as several short-term renewable and low-carbon PPAs in China, the French company said today.

The renewable generation will come from solar and wind farms in Jiangsu, the Chinese province where Air Liquide consumes the most electricity, and will power the production of industrial and medical gases. The PPA will start in January 2024.

Commenting on the agreement, Air Liquide’s Francois Abrial said: “It will allow us to lower our carbon footprint but also to meet the growing demand from our customers for competitive low-carbon solutions.”

Air Liquide operates more than 120 plants and employs almost 5,000 people in China.
