Wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa said on Monday it would build a factory for offshore nacelles in the state of New York, provided that its machines are selected in the state’s third offshore wind solicitation.

The facility would be located at the Port of Coeymans, where Siemens Gamesa’s peer GE Renewable Energy also plans to build factories to manufacture offshore wind turbine components and pick up orders stemming from the wind tender.

Siemens Gamesa said its nacelle factory would represent an investment of around USD 500 million (EUR 466.6m), and could create some 420 direct jobs. The turbine company also plans to set up a local supplier network to secure steel components, bearings and composite components, it said.

The factory and the suppliers would serve all Siemens Gamesa offshore wind projects along the US East Coast.

The New York state authorities launched the third solicitation round last July targeting at least 2,000 MW of offshore wind power.
