Lightsource bp, the UK-based solar developer half owned by BP Plc (LON:BP), on Thursday said it has launched commercial operations at its 283-MW DC Sun Mountain solar power complex in Colorado.

Located in Pueblo, the photovoltaic (PV) park will be supplying its output to Minneapolis-based utility Xcel Energy (NASDAQ:XEL). The electricity, enough to cover the consumption of more than 53,000 homes, will be sold under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).

McCarthy Building Companies acted as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. It used 636,990 ultra-low carbon solar panels by First Solar and smart solar trackers made by New Mexico-based Array Technologies to equip the solar farm.

Sun Mountain is Lightsource bp’s second solar park that enters operations in Colorado after the commissioning of the 300-MW DC BigHorn complex in October 2021. Together, the two schemes represent an investment of USD 500 million (EUR 466.6m).
