July 7 (Renewables Now) – SSE Renewables, a unit of UK energy company SSE PLC (LON:SSE), has secured a contract for difference (CfD) for half of the capacity of its 443-MW Viking wind farm project now under construction in Shetland.

Results of the UK’s fourth contract for difference (CfD) auction were announced today. SSE Renewables won a contract for 220 MW for the Viking project at a strike price of GBP 46.39 (USD 55.1/EUR 54.15) per MWh for the 2026/27 delivery year. The project will get the strike price, set on 2012 prices and annually indexed for inflation, over a 15-year period.

Viking competed in the portion of the allocation round designated for less established technologies including remote island wind. A total of 597.6 MW of remote island wind projects were successful in the auction.

Due to be completed in 2024, the Viking wind farm is expected to be the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm. The developer said it will help decarbonise energy supply in the Shetland Islands and in Scotland. Power will be sent from the islands to the mainland via a new HVDC transmission connection.

The project also supports SSE’s Net Zero Acceleration Programme (NZAP) under which the company aims to double its current 4-GW renewables capacity to 8 GW by 2026.
